Pursuing higher education is an important milestone for many students after completing 12 standards. An exciting option that is gradually gaining popularity in India is the dual degree BTech+MTech program. This integrated course allows students to earn both a bachelor’s and a master's degree in technology and engineering in just 5 years which is further organized in 10 semesters of equal duration of 6 months each.

The dual degree program of BTech+MTech holds approval from national regulatory bodies like AICTE, UGC, and DEB. The dual degree BTech+M Tech programs can be pursued right after passing Grade 12 without any entrance exam. It offers major time-saving benefits as students can earn two degrees together in a single stretch. Students enrolling in BTech and MTech programs separately would have to spend 6 years – 4 years for a BTech and 2 years for an MTech degree.

But how does this program work? What are the eligibility criteria, admission process, fee structure, and other nitty-gritty of this novel program? Which institutes and universities offer this course? What are some of the major subjects and specializations available to choose from? In this blog post, we will provide students with comprehensive guidelines on dual degree engineering program that allows them to get both BTech and MTech degrees together in 5 years. Students will learn about the advantages of pursuing this integrated course over traditional engineering programs, its limitations, the difference in the curriculum and subjects covered, and top universities/ institutes across India such as IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and others providing this option spanning across popular branches like Computer Science, IT, Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering. Whether students are Grade 12 students still deciding their academic path or wish to change their conventional engineering course to save a year and gain additional skills via an M.Tech degree, this guide will address all key aspects related to dual BTech+MTech programs.

Motivation behind the BTech/MTech Dual Degree Program

The primary motivation for premier institutes like IIT Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, LPU, and others to introduce integrated BTech/MTech programs is to motivate bright undergraduate students interested in specializing further to pursue seamless advanced studies across specializations facing innovation shortage. By motivating continuation through early exposure and flexible pathways, the 5-year dual degree program of BTech/MTech enhances the availability of competent research staff providing right from foundation levels to take on critical projects aligned to R&D national priorities. Interested students seek to maximize Return of Interest (ROI) from esteemed universities, entering a structured B.Tech+M.Tech track saves finances and one year of duration in faster employability from globally recognized and acceptable qualifications.

From capacity-building lenses, enabling high-excellence M.Tech students as teaching assistants across laboratory instruction and undergraduate courses allows knowledgeable exchange with B.Tech peers while honing their mentoring abilities. Such participation can inspire junior students to visualize similar research careers thereby organically expanding faculty pipelines over the long term. As these experienced assistants graduate into full-time teaching roles, they elevate on-campus engineering education and practice by integrating industry priorities into curriculum, teaching, and research. Top tech universities worldwide have already witnessed the cascading impact of such programs on enrollment, teaching excellence, research output, and global talent competitiveness.

Structure of the program

The comprehensive curriculum of the dual degree of BTech and MTech Program has been divided into several sections (Section 5 provides a full curriculum for all five years.) The curriculum of the first three years will be the same as those of the current BTech program.

In the 7th semester, students will be taught: 1 HSS course, and 4 Departmental Electives (at least one PG elective).

In the 8th semester, students will be engaged in MTech thesis units of four and four PG electives.

Ninth semester: Summer training OR four units of M. Tech. thesis. One PG elective and twelve units of MTech thesis per semester. The final semester that is the 10th semester will empower students with 16 units of MTech thesis. We can make the necessary revisions to the dual-degree program if the Senate approves the recommendations of the Under Graduate Review Committee (UGRC), which is reviewing the curriculum for all BTech programs offered by the Institute and is expected to provide recommendations for the same.
